Materials, side by side
Every stone behaves differently in a kitchen. Here is the short version of what we tell people at the slab yard.
-
Marble
Calcite · Mohs 3–4Good for Bathrooms, fireplaces, baking stations
Know this Etches with lemon and vinegar. Many owners like the patina; some don't.
-
Quartzite
Metamorphic · Mohs 7Good for Busy kitchens that want the look of marble
Know this Hard to cut, so lead times can run longer. Seal once a year.
-
Granite
Igneous · Mohs 6–7Good for Kitchens, outdoor kitchens, heavy use
Know this Takes heat well. Patterns vary a lot slab to slab — pick yours in person.
-
Soapstone
Talc-rich · softGood for Farmhouse kitchens, sinks, hearths
Know this Darkens with mineral oil and scratches easily, but scratches sand out.
-
Quartz
Engineered · resin boundGood for Consistent color, low upkeep, rentals
Know this No sealing needed. Keep hot pans off — resin can scorch.
-
Porcelain slab
Sintered · 6–20 mmGood for Thin profiles, wall cladding, outdoor sun
Know this The pattern is printed on the surface, so edges are usually mitered.
Pick an edge
Drawn in section, at actual proportion for a 3 cm slab. Ask for a sample piece when you visit.
From slab yard to sink cut-out
Typical timing for a kitchen.
- Week 0
Pick the slab
Walk the yard with us or send the name of the slab you saw at a supplier. We tag the one you choose so nobody else cuts it.
- Week 1
Template on site
Cabinets go in first. Then we measure with a digital templater and mark sink, cooktop and seam locations with you in the room.
- Week 2
Layout and cut
We lay the template over a photo of your slab so you can see where the veins fall before the saw touches it.
- Week 3
Install
Usually one day. We set, level, seam and seal, then cut and polish the sink and faucet holes in place.
- After
Care sheet
You get a one-page care sheet for your material, and we come back for any seam or chip touch-up.
Recent work
Swap these placeholders for your own project photos. Captions read best when they name the stone and the finish.
Before you call
A quote is faster when you have:
- A rough sketch with lengths, or the cabinet plan
- Sink and cooktop model numbers
- Whether old tops need to be removed
- A material in mind, or two you're torn between
Do you sell slabs, or only fabricate?
Both. You can choose from our stock or buy a slab from a supplier and have it delivered here for cutting.
How many seams will my kitchen have?
It depends on slab size and the shape of your layout. We show seam locations on the layout before cutting, and you approve them.
Can you reuse my old sink?
Usually, if it is undermount-ready and in good shape. Bring the model number to templating.
What happens to the offcuts?
Larger remnants can become a vanity, a shelf or a cutting board. Ask before install and we'll set them aside.
Do you work outside the city?
We install within about an hour's drive.
Tell us about the job
We reply within one business day with a ballpark and the next step.
